Menstrual Cycle

Hi everyone - I know this is a sensitive subject, but I've found that my cycle is all over the place.  I seem to be only having a week off between periods and I'm not sure if it's the medication or what.  Currently in another cycle - they usually only last 5 days, but there doesn't seem to be any easing off at the moment on day 6 with a lot of cramps.

I had that problem and they could never get it under control because the meds would cause my lupus to flare.  I ended up getting a hystorectomy to stop it because with your hormones going haywire while on your period it also flares your lupus.  Hopefully you have better luck than I did.

Menstrual irregularity is called metrorrhagia. When the bleeding is heavy, it is termed menometrorrhagia.  There is an array of causes for this type of bleeding, particularly in pre-menopausal women.  After menopause, irregular bleeding is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding and the typical causes are uterine fibroids (benign tumors), estrogen withdrawal, and of course, one must consider endometrial (uterine) and cervical cancers.  In premenopausal women, the causes are legion.  For all pateints, atypical vaginal/uterine bleeding is best evaluated by a OB-GYN.  There is a fairly standard work-up that includes excluding pregancy, thyroid disease, high prolactin levels, checking for fibroids, endometrial and cervical cancer, and other mechanical causes of bleeding.  Weight changes can also disrupt menstrual cycles and cause anovulatory bleeding. Weight loss and anorexia is a leading cause of anovulatory bleeding (bleeding without ovulating).  Weight gain (as we can see with steroid use) can precipitate polycystic ovarian syndrome, a metabolic disruption that associates with hirsutism (hair growth), glucose intolerance (pre-diabetes/diabetes) and other problems.

Before I discovered I had Lupus I was on the pill and was very regular I knew exactly when I was going to get my period and it only lasted 2 days.  Then because of other complications including my very high ANA,and Mum getting a blood clot. I came off the pill and I was alright although the bleeding became a lot heavier I knew it was due to blood thinners.  Then after having my daughter two years ago my period is once again messed up, it's all over the shop, sometimes it's so heavy I think to myself I shouldn't be bleeding like this (even though I know I am on aspirin) and other days there is hardly anything at all.  I have just now started to get very bad cramping to the point where I will have to sit down because I am in agony.  I am keeping a diary to see when I get my period and when they finish. I will miss a month for no reason and pay the price for it the next time I get it. My Mum will say to me "You just had your period" and then two days later I will have my period.  Mum also had your problem where she just kept bleeding for basically 14 days they did a vaginal scan and found out she had fibroids all over her uterus and they were causing the bleeding the best option for her was having a hysterectomy.
